This Is Where I'm at... Where are you?
June 09, 2011 12:49 AM PDT
A cheeky little mix I've recorded on a cold June afternoon. Obvious respect going out to Gil Scott-Heron (RIP). Edits, Acid, Soul, Funk, Tech, House, Deep, Left... whatever it's all in there. Something to keep your toes tapping till next time. First Podcast I've done in well over a year (maybe 2!), so this is it, where I'm at musically. Love from Australia wherever you are! Hey all, found this old mix digging through old CDs. A mix on the housey side of things, being a big fan of the broken beat scene and the likes of Jazzanova clearly shines through here. Favourites include the deepness of Frank Roger's "Bone of my Bone", the massive Phlash remix of "Stuck" by Peven Everett, an early airing of Dennis Ferrer's remix of "The Cure and The Cause" (going out to Vicky and Agata!), it later charted in 2007 and merited a full release, big tune! Hope you enjoy more retro mixes from myself, I'll maybe get my hands near some turntables to record a new mix soon! Love from Australia! Enjoy! xx Tax Return - August 2005 Mix

Hi all, Some of you may know I've relocated from Sunny Scotland to a rather damp Sydney, Australia. While trying to get to grips with this new city and the Aussie rate of pace (pretty chilled) I've found this old nugget of a mix I recorded back in 2005. It was a promotional mix I would give away on CD at gigs in Edinburgh (the old way of sharing music and promotion. It's all much easier now with file sharing, podcasts, facebook and what have you. Some big tunes for me back then are included in the mix. Recloose joining kiwi's Fat Freddy's Drop frontman Joe Dukie on “Dust”, the amazing boogie-anthem-although-it-was-a-b-side “Burning Up” by Imagination, the extraordinary “Flookin” by Solid Groove was not out my record box for years and not forgetting the rap classic “Me, Myself and I”. I hope you enjoy the sounds... Akabu feat. Linda Clifford - “Ride the Storm” (NRK 2002)
Well, Europe, I hear you're having a rough winter, I hope this warms the soul a little. See you down the front, Gary on the Money Tax Return - Astrojazz Spring Mix 2007

Tax Return - Summer 2005, Live @ Opal Lounge, Edinburgh
June 26, 2008 04:15 AM PDT
Hi all, Back in 2005 I was jetting off to Spain for some well deserved time in the sun. While DJing at Opal Lounge I decided to mix myself a wee poolside soundtrack on my minidisk player (remember those?!). Last week I discovered the disc, gave it a listen and was taken straight back to chilling by the pool, sipping on San Miguels and late nights out. With Summer (apparently) here I thought I’d post this reminiscent mix for you all to download… Expect deep funk, classic soul, latin sounds and more. As usual I hope you enjoy… This will be the first of a few mixes from back in the day I’ll be posting, so aim your I-tunes at this site and enjoy the first instalment of Gary on the Money’s “Tax Returns”… G on the £ Tax Return – Summer 2005 Mix (Recorded Live @ Opal Lounge, Edinburgh) N’Dell – “This Thing”

Oldies and new sounds mixed up. Deeper slant towards the end. Too long for a CD but not long enough for my liking!! Kicking off with some Donald Byrd, Gil Scott Heron, Edinburgh new-legends the Linkwood Family and into some Marvin Gaye, Trus'me, broken beat, deep as shit House Music right through to Quentin Harris' now legendary remix of Leela James and finishing with the best N'Dambi remix I've heard since the Yam-Who re-edit of "Call Me" as featured on Bugz in the Attic's Fabric Live Compilation and a hell of a load of live sets by yours truly. Hope you enjoy it. Spread it to your friends. Gary on the Money

Podcast SummaryExpect anything really, some days i'm playing Funk, Soul, Motown, Jazz others I'm tearing up House, Broken Beat, Garage, Techno and even indulge in some hip-hop and DnB now and again. Only one consistent factor... it's all quality music. I Hope you like it! Please check my web sites on myspace, Bebo and facebook for future gigs. Always good to see you there, whoever u are!?! :-) Gary on the Money About Gary on the MoneyDJ career started at the tender age of 13 years old playing commercial music to smiley school crowds at parties and even the odd mobile disco (make some noise!" and all that nonsense. Anyway, enough of that... After seeing "DJs wanted, send us yer tapes" style poster at my local Fopp Records in Aberdeen (back when Nigel still worked there! Bloody hell) I thought what the hell and submitted some mix of funky soulful house music with a splash of disco thrown in for good measure... and didn't expect to hear a thing from anyone.... Result, a chap called Bobby rings me up asking to meet me for a chat and before you know it I've got a weekly residency alongside a nice funk spinner called DJ Spud at Po Na Na in Aberdeen with "Mischief on Mondays". Typical studenty affair with those drunken fools from RGU and Aberdeen Uni flying the north east flag weekly. Successful run on Mondays and a messy Stint on New year’s Eve then turned into Bobby offering me another night on Sundays turning out to be a wee disco, funk night called “Sunday Beats†that got a little more House fuelled as the clocked ticked on… I was doing a grand job annoying music fans in far too many record shops , mainly Correction Records where my wants-list would consist of anything that Danny Rampling had played on Radio 1 the previous Saturday. After much ooh-ing and ahh-ing Gary M decided to head south to Edinburgh, country boy to city living n all that. After a couple of months in Edinburgh, I spotted another flyer for “DJs Wantedâ€. Again, what did I have to lose other than a tape?! The result was meeting the Edinburgh soul fanatic that is Erik D’Viking (www.getintotrouble.com), Jay Feeney (www.onthepod.com) and Jez Hill (www.freak music.com). These guys sorted me out with a bunch of gigs across Edinburgh, and my thanks for that will never be forgotten (Aye, I’ll buy u a pint for that soon Eric ;-). Being one of a load of ‘Freak DJs’ scored me a 3 year residency at Edinburgh place-to-be-seen Opal Lounge. Mammoth 5 hour sets every Wednesday and later Thursdays were a real pleasure for me to play because I could spin a wide variety of music and genres. Early doors (6pm), Opal-goers were treated to downbeat funk, soul, disco, jazz etc moving through to a late night mix of soulful house music, garage, broken beat and disco. Unfortunately this would normally be followed by a stack of Beyonce and Kylie records once I finished up, but the good memories of Opal still shine through… Key memory of Opal Lounge was myself and house music follower Sol indulging in some 4 deck madness on the last Saturday night of the Edinburgh Festival until the early hours of the morning. Great times Sol, get back into the scene man!! “Cutbacks†at Opal Lounge eventually leaded to the loss of daytime and evening DJs and resulted with them “hiring†an I-pod set to shuffle to score the atmosphere to this day. Sadly a move I’ve seen across many bars in the UK. Having lost a regular gig after 3 years turned out to be a blessing in disguise… Gary M was done with, Gary on the Money was born… Still having a healthy thirst for good music I started hanging out more with the crew of Underground Solushn Records, the Trouble DJs, and a good handful of key players on the vibrant Edinburgh clubscene. Since those days at Opal Lounge I’ve managed to play to great crowds of funky youngsters at venues like Assembly, Cabaret Voltaire, Tempus, 99 Hanover St, Jazz Bar, Bongo Club, Pivo, Sygn, Garibaldi’s (Oh god, twice, don’t ask…) and have been blessed with the opportunity to play some of Edinburgh’s biggest nights such as Ultragroove, 33/45 Live, Trouble, Saturday Night Fish Fry, Souled Out and more. Musically I’ve still got the same love of all things House Music, a fetish that’s becoming more obsession these days. Hanging with the Trouble lads and the Departure Lounge/Four Corners crew has opened my short-sighted eyes into the world of err, world music. I’m now a true follower of all things Broken Beat, Nu-jazz, Afrobeat, Nu-soul and the late night ramblings of Mr Gilles Peterson. Watch this space for upcoming gigs, charts, online mixes for downloads (having issues with these at the moment) and I hope to see you enjoying my tuneage soon. Ask me for a badge if u see me out and about…
